When I started toying around with the idea of a monthly sewing series, I knew I wanted to try some projects I’d never tackled before. This sweater immediately drew my eye as I browsed for inspiration. I loved that it was still a basic piece, but it had this fun pop that could be dressed up or down. The project itself was fairly inexpensive, totaling around $40 for the sweatshirt and decorative trim.
Initially I had hand sewn the trim to my sleeves. It was sort of difficult to make the trim even as it went around the sleeve. Then I decided I would use the machine to attach them, but that meant I would have to unpick the seam. After grabbing the seam ripper I took all the work apart and started over. (Note: If I had to do this project all over again I would use Fabri-Tac glue and glue the trim down first before reinforcing it with thread.)
(Uneven trim hand sewn)
(Sleeve seam unpicked)
(Trim pinned in place, ready to be sewn)
(Sleeve showing the extra trim piece added at the sleeve cuff)
What would I do differently next time? I would choose trim that isn’t very thick to make sewing easier. Like I mentioned before, gluing the trim first would have saved a lot of time in the long run. Taking the sleeve completely off is also something I’d try. With this piece I wanted to make it as easy as possible, but I found that my “easy” made things way harder. Hindsight, am I right?
I am very excited to get more use out of this sweater. This was a fun way to kick off this series! What are your thoughts? Would you make something like this?
