This month I wanted to do a project that was easier, and this didn’t meet that requirement at first. In full transparency it was user error more than anything. One of my greatest character flaws is I take things too far, and that spills over into anything creative I’m doing. I feel like a lot of people can relate to that, so I don’t feel too awful about myself lol. This is actually the second attempt at this shirt because I totally messed up the first one. Trust me, this second go is much better! But enough of this boring explanation; let’s get into it!
I started by take 2 shirts that were the same size and laying them flat on the ground. (I recommend getting two shirts that are perfectly identical in size. Mine were the same size but made by different manufacturers so the sizing wasn’t spot on.) From here I folded the shirts in half and made a small cut at the bottom with my scissors to mark the halfway point, we’re not real technical around here haha.
(Note the adorable mini helper. He’s so fun!)
Once you’ve cut the shirts in half you get the play around here. I laid out the right side of the white next to the left side of the red and vice versa. The one that felt the most appealing to me was white on the left and red on the right. Make your choice and then line the fabric right sides together, pin and sew.
Try on your shirt and make sure you like how it looks. Overall I loved it, but the neckline was too high for my taste. To solve this problem I simply flipped the original neckline into the shirt and sewed it in place with a zig zag stitch to give it a little stretch. It’s still a high neckline, but it isn’t as high which is what I wanted.
To finish off the shirt I decided to cut off some of the sleeve and bottom. The shirts I picked are a size up from what I normally wear, and I bought them from the men’s section so I’d have lots of fabric to work with. But seeing it on with the extra long sleeves and hem made me feel like I was drowning. This particular fabric doesn’t fray it just rolls up in this cool way, so I just cut it and called it good. You could sew the new hem and sleeve if you’d like, but I wanted a specific look for this. And that’s it!
I’m excited to see how I can style this when the weather is warmer! What do you think? Is this a project you would try for yourself or is it out there for you? I’d love to know!
