My 3 Cures for Creative Constipation

I like to think that there is a little woman living in my head, running the creativity center of my brain. We'll call her Minerva (cuz she gets on mi 'nervas' ;) ba do cha!). There are months when she takes a really long vacation. Without warning, she just up and leaves me hanging. Don't worry, I leave the porch light on because she always finds her way back home. Sometimes the ideas cramped in that tiny suitcase she brings back blow me away. Personally I think inspiration comes in spurts. One day you are high as a kite, your mind racing with ideas. Even my dreams are overtaken by it. Then there are times when creativity runs far far away, like I mentioned before.

My husband is going to school full time now, and he just barely got a new job. I'm still looking for work, so money is pretty nonexistent. That, my friends, means I can't go out and buy materials to constantly make my own clothing. Although, that is my idea of living in heaven, it's not practical at this point in my life. So when the money is kaput, and the creativity is bubbling to the surface, I look around the good old world wide web in search of--you guessed it--inspiration. Luckily for me, when tight times like these appear out of thin air, the hand-me-downs start pouring in. Hallelujah.

I do have a few solutions when I'm in a rut. Three to be exact.

First, I find things that give me the 'Ohmygoshwhyareyounotinmycloset?' feeling. Like this little number for example. Of course I can't really make this. There are some pieces you just have to buy. However, the studs on this jacket could inspire me for so many different projects. As could the leather.

Second, I look for items that could be versatile. What if I want to dress down during the day, but be able to spice up my look at night? When I plan a refashion, I almost always go this route. I don't want a piece I can only wear with a certain outfit. That seems incredibly boring. No, I want adventure and excitement in my clothes. So I'd probably steer towards this. You could wear a shirt underneath with snazzy jeans, or maybe a pencil skirt with a nice blazer or cardigan. Or just by itself, adding a statement necklace or a belt around the waist to spice it up. The possibilities are seriously endless!

Third, I look for things that are out of my comfort zone. Strange as it may seem, I tend to find quite a bit of creative juices hiding in pieces I'd normally run away from. New is scary to me, as I'm sure it is to most people. Aren't we lucky. I like to think I counteract all that nonsense by doing this third step, but you know as well as I do, that that isn't always how it works. I still try anyway. Does that count?

For example, this is obnoxious to me. I'd probably never be caught dead in it. Someone might think this is radical. I'm not saying they're style is bad. You just keep your big kitty sweater.

Or this dress. I'm pretty sure I had a nightmare of a clown wearing this once. I'm joking. The problem I have with this is it's so busy. But you could easily take note of how the colors go well together. Or how the dress shape would be flattering with a pair of pumps. When you step out of these comfort zones, you really have to remain open-minded. Creativity is a sneaky little vixen. Just like Minerva.

Don't get me wrong, I can see the potential in these two pieces, but they just aren't me. If I put these on, I'd feel like a small child. I swear I just had a 90's flashback. Yikes. I can find beauty in them, though. It's just enough to brainstorm with. Perhaps one day you'll catch me in something similar to these. Then you'll know I finally had my body snatched up by aliens. Just kidding.

*I highly recommend looking at these clothing sites. They have awesome items I'm sure you will absolutely love. Stir up your own creativity or maybe find something that you can't live without. I'm partial to this dress.
